Through relationships with local high schools, unpaid internships in some science departments are available for students in their junior or senior year of high school. Internships vary in length depending on the school requirements. Interns work with the science staff on a variety of projects. Training and guidance are provided. An interest in science and natural history is required. Patience, dexterity, attention to detail, penchant for perfection and a tolerance for dust and dirt are needed. Students enrolled in programs in biology, ecology, geology, and other life and earth sciences may be eligible for an unpaid internship in one of the science departments.
