The Mammal Atlas Mapping Application is an interactive web site that displays maps of mammal occurrence records from our GIS database.

Disclaimers

Before using the mapping application, be aware that the mapped points represent a wide range of sources, dates, accuracies, and precisions and have not yet been fully reviewed and corrected. This prototype mapping application does not distinguish between historic and recent observations or between spatially precise (e.g., obtained using a Global Positioning System) and very general locations (e.g., field notes referencing a mountain or valley).

Thus, “points” on the Mapping Application maps represent a mix of highly precise and very general locations and should be interpreted with caution. Note also that some older records may fall in areas that were subsequently developed, so the species may no longer occur there.

For confidentiality reasons, this public website mapping application does not yet allow users access to the occurrence attribute data, such as observation date, museum catalog number, locality description, spatial precision, and source database.

Future versions may allow access to such information, or at least will allow the user to select data records meeting certain criteria, such as only recent records or records exceeding a specified spatial precision.
