Current Volunteer Opportunities
Now Recruiting for Docents, Canyoneers, and Museum Whalers
Are you interested in learning more about our natural world and sharing that knowledge? Three volunteer groups are recruiting for fall classes. These volunteer programs reach over 50,000 people a year. The Docents bring the Museum to the schools and provide classes in the Museum. The Canyoneers lead free public hikes throughout the San Diego region. The Museum Whalers educate whale-watching passengers on the wildlife of the San Diego coast. Each opportunity is unique and the training is specific to the skills required.
Please complete the online volunteer application to apply and you will be invited to upcoming orientation.

Science Volunteers
Volunteers in our science department perform important tasks which maintain the Museum’s extensive collections. Opportunities include specimen preparation, collection inventory, and database entries. These are WEEKDAY only opportunities (unless otherwise indicated) with limited openings. The following departments are now recruiting:
Botany is seeking volunteers to prepare mounted plant specimens. This is delicate work requiring patience and dexterity. An interest in plants is helpful but not required. Volunteers must be available 4 hours weekly; Monday Thursday.

The San Diego Plant Atlas Project is accepting applications for parabotanists. Parabotanists are volunteers in the field who collect plant specimens. Trainings on proper collection technique are conducted on a periodic basis. Parabotanists adopt a 3-mile section of San Diego County, collect 25 specimens a year, and enter important scientific data in a web-based database. Computer literacy and some familiarity with native plants is helpful.
