Sixth Baja California Peninsula Botanical Symposium

November 5 & 6, 2003

Call for Papers

The Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste (CIBNOR) and the Sociedad Botánica de México (SBM) call for contributions for the joint symposium on the Floristics of Northern Mexico.  The CIBNOR, the San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM), and the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) annually or bi-annually celebrate with a meeting to present advances in floristic research of the Baja California Peninsula and neighboring areas.  This time, the Sixth Symposium will be coordinated with the SBM meeting in a joint floristic symposium about Northern Mexico at the CIBNOR facilities near La Paz, Baja California Sur.

This meeting will be held 5 and 6 November 2003. The main objective is to become informed about the activities carried out by Mexican and American botanists working in the arid sector of Mexico (Baja California Peninsula, Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas).

We invite plant taxonomists, ecologists, and students to submit abstracts to participate actively in this meeting.  Depending on the number of participants, works will be divided into oral presentations and posters. Abstracts should be sent before 30 July 2003, be no more than one typewritten page (Times New Roman, 12 pt. type). Acceptance will be communicated before 15 August.

Besides the oral and poster presentations, the annual meeting of the SBM and a conference will be held.  Organizers intend to conclude the meeting with a workshop on diversity and endemism of northern Mexico. Also, we plan a post-symposium 3-day excursion to one of the protected natural areas of Baja California Sur (Sierra de La Laguna, 3 days) or a 2-day to one of the Gulf islands depending of the general interests of the participants.

We invite botanists and the general public to declare their intention to participate in our symposium and send an abstract, as indicated earlier, as well as their preference of excursion.
